Seven Rabbits Review

You can recognize a captivating book from the very first page, where the characters immediately pique your interest, and by the end of the first chapter, you’re completely engrossed. A skilled writer adeptly immerses you in relatable characters and situations, painting vivid landscapes that materialize before your eyes. When tragedy strikes within the book, it’s as if you’re experiencing it firsthand, feeling your soul being torn apart and your heart wrenched with each emotional blow in every scene. The book unfolds like a cinematic experience, allowing you to effortlessly visualize every scene, every tragic moment, and ultimately, every resolution.

The book’s outset does include trigger warnings. I strongly advise individuals who may be triggered by scenes involving blood, guts, gore, or abuse to consider avoiding this book. It’s replete with bloody and gory imagery, and no slasher narrative would be complete without some form of abuse.

The protagonist of the story is a sophomore named Chase. A clique of high school football players heads to a cabin for a weekend of uninhibited partying. Unbeknownst to them, as they indulge in drinking and drug use, they’re about to embark on a weekend far more intense than they ever imagined.

All seven members of the football team have engaged in actions that have triggered severe retribution from certain townsfolk. Without divulging spoilers, as it’s easy to do so in a book of this nature, I encourage you to pick up the book and experience it for yourself. The journey of the seven “rabbits” begins innocuously but soon plunges into the depths of maiming, torture, and murder.

What sets this book apart is the remarkable relatability of its characters, whether they belong to the football team, serve as their “victims,” or are among the seven rabbits seeking revenge. Each character’s motivations are understandable, blurring the lines between good and bad. While you might initially believe you can predict the story’s trajectory and its eventual outcome, I’m willing to wager that by the story’s conclusion, you’ll be in for a shocking twist that defies your expectations.

If Author Timothy King were a baseball player, this book would be his World Series home run. Initially, when I agreed to read this book, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it. It had been so long since I’d delved into a horror novel. Would it come off as cheesy? Would it be excessively gory or hard to follow? However, as I raced through the pages, I found myself intimately acquainted with each character, envisioning them as friends, neighbors, people I knew. Every scene evoked emotions, whether they were sad, tragic, or simply intense. I would categorize this as a slasher-style horror or revenge horror, as it delves into realistic, entirely plausible human terror.
